Journey to the coastal wetlands of Georgia at the Decatur Book Festival with author G. Wayne Clough! His new book, The Ever-Changing Georgia Coast: A Natural History of Its Creation, Transformation, and Future, is part travelogue, part natural history, and part nature guide of one of the most vibrant interconnected ecosystems in the United States. Clough and his moderator, Charles Seabrook, will discuss how nature has transformed the coast and how human impact continues to shape its future. This session is in partnership with Georgia Humanities.

About the Author

G. Wayne Clough, born in South Georgia, received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, served on the faculties of prominent research universities, and traveled the world as a geological and earthquake engineer. He served as president of the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1994 to 2008 and as secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 2008 to 2015. He was named Conservationist of the Year in 2020 by the Satilla Riverkeeper, and his book Things New and Strange: A Southerner’s Journey Through the Smithsonian Collections won him Author of the Year in History by the Georgia Writers Association in 2020. His new book is The Ever-Changing Georgia Coast: A Natural History of Its Creation, Transformation, and Future.


About the Moderator


Charles Seabrook retired from the Atlanta-Journal Constitution in 2005 after 34 years

as a science/environmental writer. He continues to write on a freelance basis his popular

weekly column, “Wild Georgia,” which runs every Saturday in the AJC's Living section. He

is the author of three books, Red Clay, Pink Cadillacs and White Gold: The Kaolin Chalk

Wars, Cumberland Island: Strong Women, Wild Horses, and The World of the Salt Marsh:

Appreciating and Protecting the Tidal Marshes of the Southeastern Atlantic Coast. He and

his wife Laura live in Decatur, GA.
