Emory University - Emerging Student Writers

Join us in the Decatur Library to hear from Emerging Student Writers! These special sessions feature talented student writers from Georgia colleges reading their original work in 45-minute sessions throughout the day. 

The stage will be situated alongside The Book As Art v.14: Ghosted exhibit, creating a vibrant atmosphere where visual art and creative writing come together.

This session will be held on the Fourth Floor of Decatur Library. To reach the Fourth Floor, you'll need to take the elevator on the right (when you're facing the elevators–it's labeled). If the other elevator opens when you call, please take it to the third floor, exit, and press the up button again to call the correct elevator.

This event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required, and seating is first come, first served. Emcee: Tiphanie Yanique

About the Emory University Emerging Student Writers:

Alex Dawson is a writer of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. She is a community college transfer student from California and a senior at Emory majoring in English and Creative Writing. Alex is an intern for Insular Archipelago, a collaborative network of scholars, artists, and institutions revealing relation between US Oceania and Caribbean territories. She is currently submerged in an honors thesis, a short story collection exploring the impact of climate catastrophes on communities and landscapes across the US. Alex is particularly interested in identity, queerness, memory, culminating in how we ourselves shape land and how land shapes us.

Jennifer Gu is an undergraduate student at Emory University, majoring in English & Creative Writing and Applied Math & Statistics. She is currently at work on a story collection for her honors thesis.

Isabel Horne is a poet and fourth year student at Emory University majoring in religious studies and creative writing. Through poetry, she is interested in exploring questions of sickness, the human body, and healing. She is currently an undergraduate fellow at the Emory Center for the Study of Law and Religion researching the impact of United States Border Policy on the sacred and secular of borderlands, and is working on an honors thesis examining Muslim communities on social margins.

Hafsa Ismail is a sophomore at Emory University who plans to major in Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology and Creative Writing. She likes to write character-driven stories that focus on inner and interpersonal struggles. She also likes to explore her culture as a first-generation Somali American in her fiction.

Simon Kotzin is a sophomore at Emory University, where she is majoring in English & Creative Writing and Film & Media. She primarily writes short stories, poetry, and film scripts. She was born and raised in Washington Heights, a neighborhood in uptown Manhattan, though she spends most of her time wandering around art museums in New York and Atlanta.
