Hometown Heroes
Wow, it’s been a busy few days in the DBFiverse. I’ll catch you up over the course of a few posts rather than try and cram it all into one. Last night was a very special night for the book festival. The Decatur City Council and the Decatur Business Assocation honored the Decatur Book Festival with a very special Hometown Heroes award for the festival’s contributions to the Decatur community. The award was presented to the seven members of the book festival’s executive board.
That’s six of us there. From left to right, Judy Turner (president of Decatur First Bank), Bill Starr (director, Georgia Center for the Book), me (your merry blogger), Daren Wang (executive director and all around visionary big brain of the festival), Richard Lenz (president and CEO of Lenz, Inc.), and Linda Harris (Assistant Director of Community and Economic Development for the City of Decatur). Board president Alice Murray is out of frame giving our acceptance speech.
The seven of us received the plaques for our walls, but as we’ve been telling everyone, this festival is the creation of hundreds of people. (We may even be creeping up on thousands by now.) The Decatur community has really taken ownership of this festival from very early on and given it the unique, welcoming, fun-loving character that has authors from all over the country talking about this festival and telling their publicists to keep sending them to Decatur. Thanks to all. Come on by the office anytime you want to see our plaque.
