Our children’s parades are so popular, we’re having two of them again this year! Saturday morning’s parade will be led by none other than Skippjon Jones and his wildly popular creator, Judy Schachner, with a reading from Skippy’s newest adventure (Skippyjon Jones Class Action) to follow.
On Sunday morning, there will be a Pete the Cat parade (wear your white [or red, or brown, or blue] shoes), with our local bestsellers James Dean and Eric Litwin, singing and shouting and sharing about their newest Pete the Cat picture book, Rocking in my School Shoes.
Line up for both children's parades will be in the grassy area on Clairemont Avenue just behind Emory Medical Care Foundation (101 W. Ponce de Leon, Decatur, Ga. 30030). Line up for the parades will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Little Shop of Stories, in conjunction with AJC Decatur Book Festival, the Decatur Education Foundation, and the Decatur Rotary Club, is pleased to announce a new, city-wide reading initiative, On the Same Page. Their goal is to foster a community of readers by bringing families together around the same book. Each year, beginning this fall, On the Same Page will select a children's book for local children and their families to read. This special book will be promoted around the city, and Little Shop of Stories will work with schools and libraries, coordinate book groups, lead discussions, and host other book-related events. The program will culminate later in the fall with a grand finale visit from the author. The formal announcement of this year’s title will be made on the Children’s Stage during the Festival.
Beloved singer/songwriter Caroline Herring will also be sharing on the Children’s Stage her songs inspired by children’s books, (including the Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton, and Chicken Soup with Rice by Maurice Sendak).
The 39 Clues was popular the first time, but now get reading for the SECOND series (Cahills vs. Vespers), on the Children’s Stage with best-selling author, Gordon Korman!
Other fantastic authors and/or illustrators who will be joining us on the Children’s Stage this year include Angela DiTerlizzi, Lisa McMann, Margaret Peterson Haddix, Tony DiTerlizzi, Charles Ghigna, Tim Green, and Adam Hurwitz.
