AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical Announces Theatrical Outfit Collaboration

Book Club Sundays at A Confederacy of Dunces Will Include Post-Show Discussion

July 29, 2010

A unique collaboration between the AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical and Atlanta’s Theatrical Outfit presents Book Club Sundays with group rates for Sunday matinees of A Confederacy of Dunces and will offer opportunities for theatergoers to discuss how the novel translates to the stage.

Theatrical Outfit Executive Artistic Director Tom Key adapted the Pulitzer Prize-winning play for the stage, and well known Atlanta director Richard Garner, Producing Artistic Director of Georgia Shakespeare, will direct the production.

“This partnership with Theatrical Outfit is an exciting way to provide a special benefit for Atlanta area book clubs,” AJC DBF Executive Director Daren Wang said.

The post-show discussions of the world premiere play will follow Theatrical Outfit’s 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinees Aug. 15, 22, and 29, and will focus on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and how it translates to the stage. Discounted group rates for Book Club Sundays as well as other performances of the show can be arranged though Theatrical Outfit Box Office and Group Sales Manager Whitney Rusert at 678-528-1497.

A Confederacy of Dunces runs Aug. 11-Sept. 5 at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s at 84 Luckie Street in downtown Atlanta.

In another aspect of the collaboration, Key, Garner, and members of the cast will talk about A Confederacy of Dunces and how it was adapted for the stage during the AJC DBF at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Decatur High School auditorium, and cast members will perform scenes from the play.

The AJC Decatur Book Festival will celebrate its fifth year of bringing a wide variety of authors and events to the downtown Decatur Square Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-5, 2010.
