AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical Announces ‘Name the Monster’ Contest

Winner Will Receive an iPad and Priority Seating At the Labor Day Weekend Event

June 7, 2010

Calling all book lovers. Bookzilla is returning to the Decatur Square for the 5th annual AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (AJC DBF), and you have a chance to name his new sidekick and get a front-row seat at the festival.

Bookzilla, the popular cartoon character created for the 2009 festival, is getting a friend. And you have a chance to pick his name. The winning entry in a “Name the Monster” contest will receive an iPad, VIP seating at all Festival events, and entry to the exclusive VIP author reception on Saturday, Sept. 4.

“We had so much fun with our monsters last year, we decided to spread it around with our festival goers and the readers of our title sponsor, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution,” AJC DBF Executive Director Daren Wang said.

Publicity for the contest will begin in the AJC, on ajc.com, and on AccessAtlanta.com on June 28. Contestants can submit entries starting on July 6.

The public will be able to vote on their choice from the top 10 names the last week in July, and the winner will be announced on Aug. 14.

Official announcement of the winner, and the new name of the monster, will be during an event with legendary singer/songwriter Rosanne Cash at Agnes Scott College in Decatur. At the event, at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 in Presser Hall, Cash will talk about her life and her new memoir, “Composed.”

The daughter of music legend Johnny Cash has promised to share some stories, sign books, and play a couple of songs at the end of the event. She will perform on a custom-made Martin D-40 guitar donated by America’s oldest brewery, Yuengling. The guitar will be raffled off with proceeds going to the festival’s literacy efforts.

Tickets to the Rosanne Cash event are $30 and include a copy of “Composed.” Tickets will be available starting July 6 at A Cappella books, 484-C Moreland Avenue NE, in Atlanta.

There is no entry fee for the “Name the Monster” contest and contestants do not need to be present at the Rosanne Cash event to win.

The AJC Decatur Book Festival will celebrate its fifth year of bringing a wide variety of authors and events to the Decatur Square Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-5, 2010.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical is the largest independent book festival in the country and the fourth largest overall. In 2009, more than 300 authors and tens of thousands of festival goers crowded the historic downtown Decatur Square to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more.
