‘The Bookie Monster’ Name Gets Sherry Forester of Fairburn VIP Seating During Fifth Annual Festival Labor Day Weekend
August 16, 2010
“The Bookie Monster” is preparing to chomp down on volumes of books during the AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (AJC DBF) Labor Day weekend.
Readers of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution selected the name submitted by Sherry Forester of Fairburn as winner of the “Name the Monster” contest. Her entry, The Bookie Monster, nets her a new iPad, donated by Festival sponsor Onyx Consulting, and VIP seats at the AJC DBF.
The Bookie Monster is hungry to take his place as a fitting competitor to Bookzilla, the popular character created for the 2009 Festival that is making an encore appearance this year.
“We had so much fun last year when we were naming the monsters we wanted to let the public join us this year,” said AJC DBF Executive Director Daren Wang. “Our partners at the AJC were the obvious choice to help us create the ‘Name the Monster’ contest, and it was a huge success.”
A total of 1,068 AJC readers submitted names to the contest. The AJC selected the top five names and asked ajc.com and AccessAtlanta.com readers to vote.
The Bookie Monster’s three heads depict Ignatius J. Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces, Max from Where the Wild Things Are, and novelist James Joyce.
Runners-up include Wanetta Ellis for “Bartholomew Booker,” Sondra Wright for “Booxly,” Melissa Noe for “Ignatius Pendragon,” and Ralph Kirkland for “The Gutenborg.” Runners-up will receive coupons for AJC DBF T-shirts and tickets to the keynote address by National Book Award winner Jonathan Franzen who will open the Festival at 8 p.m. Friday, September 3, at Agnes Scott College’s Presser Hall.
The AJC Decatur Book Festival will celebrate its fifth year of bringing a wide variety of authors and events to the Decatur Square Labor Day weekend, September 3-5, 2010.
