Scenes from A Confederacy of Dunces Among Theatrical Offerings During Labor Day Weekend Event
What do Ignatius J. Riley, from A Confederacy of Dunces, Ralphie from A Christmas Story, and Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web have in common?
Each will be portrayed by actors at the fifth annual AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical Labor Day weekend in Decatur.
On Saturday, Theatrical Outfit Executive Artistic Director Tom Key will discuss how he adapted the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Confederacy of Dunces for the stage and actors will perform scenes from the play. Immediately following, authors Doug Crandell and Bill Cotter will present “Influenced by Dunces,”a discussion of the influence of John Kennedy Toole’s work on American literature.
Also on Saturday, every 12-year-old boy with dreams of playing of Ralphie in A Christmas Story can have a shot at the role during open auditions at Several Dancers Core. The auditions are for a December production at Georgia Shakespeare of a play based on the popular movie.
On Sunday, puppeteers from the Center for Puppetry Arts will share some of the puppets in their current production of Charlotte’s Web and discuss what goes into creating a puppet show.
The Center for Puppetry Arts will also share puppets and practices from their show, Tales of Edgar Allen Poe, at the Eddie’s Attic Stage Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Back on the Children’s Stage, dancer Julie Galle Baggenstoss will interpret Munro Leaf’s The Story of Ferdinand through live flamenco dance. After bringing this children’s favorite to the stage with circling hands and staccato footwork, flamenco dancers will invite kids to do the same during a free flamenco dance lesson.
A Confederacy of Dunces events begin at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Decatur High School. The play runs through September 12 at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s in downtown Atlanta.
Ralphie auditions for Georgia Shakespeare will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Several Dancers Core, adjacent to the Children’s Stage on the Decatur Square.
The Charlotte’s Web event will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on the Children’s Stage.
A reading of The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf and the free flamenco dance lesson will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
