Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery, in cooperation with the AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical, proudly announces the first Experimental Writers Asylum (XWA). This series of events has as its focus pioneers of previously unknown or underexplored literary dimensions and the stuff such explorers of language uncover, discover, and/or recover.
All events occur in and around The Seen Gallery, 415 Church St., Decatur, Ga., 30030, and in conjunction with the surrounding and simultaneous Decatur Book Festival.
Friday, September 3rd. 10–11 pm: An adults-only presentation from Jessica Blinkhorn, hailed by the Village Voice for her bold erotic writings. Ms. Blinkhorn, a native of Austell, Georgia, earned her Bachelor’s degree in drawing and painting at Kennesaw State University and her Master’s degree in those disciplines at Georgia State University. She is the subject of a short documentary, Grounded by Reality.
Saturday, September 4th. 3–5pm: A showcase of works by local independent publishers puts the spotlight on items from Atlanta Poets Group, Dust to Digital, Fifth Planet Press, Fort!/da?, and others. 5–6pm: Atlanta Poets Group contributor James Sanders in performance. 6–7pm: Book sculptor Brian Dettmer—whose works have been shown at Atlanta’s Saltworks Gallery, New York’s Museum of Arts and Design, and the annual Art Papers Art Auction—is host to a slideshow/exhibition of his work. 8–11pm: Publication party for The Open Face Sandwich, Volume 2, with readings from Bill Taft, Alison Davis, and other local experimentalists. Volume 1 of TOFS earned a nomination in 2009 from the Utne Independent Press Awards for Best New Publication.
Sunday, September 5th. 1–2pm: Scorch Atlas author Blake Butler offers readings. Mr. Butler’s forthcoming book The Copy Family is to be published in 2010 by Harper Perennial. 2–3pm: Michael Martone, author of books including The Blue Guide to Indiana, Double-wide: Collected Fiction, and Michael Martone, reads from his work and discusses it. Mr. Martone has taught at Harvard University, Iowa State University, and Syracuse University. He is currently a faculty member in the English Department at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
