Janna McMahan's debut novel, Calling Home, received high praise from critics and readers alike for its detailed Kentucky landscape and culture, lively and well-developed characters and action-packed plot. Calling Home was a "Need to Read" selection in Target Stores across the nation in April 2008. Janna's second novel, The Ocean Inside, set along the South Carolina coast, quickly became a bestseller for numerous independent booksellers this summer. Publisher's Weekly called The Ocean Inside, "Vividly drawn." PW writes, "McMahan's descriptions of the Lowcountry and its unique climate and customs jump off the page." This winter will see the release of her first novella, Decorations, part of a holiday anthology entitled Snow Angels, also from Kensington Publishing.

Janna’s short fiction has won numerous awards including the Imaginative Writing Award from the Kentucky Women Writer’s Conference, the South Carolina Fiction Project and the Piccolo Spoleto Fiction Open. Her short stories have been published in journals, magazines and newspapers such as Wind, Limestone, Yamassee, The Nantahala Review, Arts Across Kentucky, The Charleston Post & Courier and Alimentum: The Literature of Food. Janna has also published many dozen personal essays and articles on visual and literary art. Her non-fiction has appeared in Skirt!, MAMM, Cure, Appalachian Journal, South Carolina Wildlife, Charleston, South Carolina Homes & Gardens, Sandlapper and online. Her most recent essay, "The Worst Bad Neighbor," is included in the anthology We All Live Downstream from Motes Books.
