Johnnie Gabriel is a 64-year-old small business owner, wife and mother. She was born in Columbus, Ga. moving to Macon, Ga. at the age of 5. She married her high school sweetheart, Dwight Payne, at the age of 19 and moved to Atlanta where her two daughters, Stephanie and Laura, were born. Dwight died at the young age of 31 and she later met and married her present husband, Ed Gabriel. She was a stay-at- home Mom for many years and loved every minute of it. After Stephanie had graduated from college and Laura was half way through, a real estate recession struck and she realized the need to go back into the workforce. She worked in a corporate setting for a short while and then in two family businesses with friends. She began baking cakes out of her house for even more extra income (the recession was a long one). In 1996, she opened Gabriel's Desserts with made-from-scratch recipes and a handful of customers. She started in 700 square feet selling cakes to order. In early 2007, she moved to 4800 square feet, serving breakfast, lunch and supper. Because of the generous publicity that her cousin, Paula Deen, has given her she was approached to do a cookbook of her very own. She is grateful for the solid family traditions and love that has always been in her family.
