on the Downtown Decatur Square

Festival Lineup Features Nationally Acclaimed Musicians

The 2008 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (DBF) will close with a performance by Patterson Hood, front man of Athens-based alternative country band the Drive-By Truckers. Hood’s performance is presented by Lenz Music, a division of Lenz, Inc., an integrated marketing company in downtown Decatur.

DBF will be held Labor Day Weekend, August 29-31, on and around the downtown Decatur Square. Hood’s free performance will be Sunday, August 31, at 7:30 p.m. on the plaza of the Decatur Square.

“We’ve got an outstanding lineup of musicians coming to the festival this year, and no one will want to miss Patterson Hood’s closing performance,” said DBF Executive Director Daren Wang.

Richard Lenz, President/CEO of Lenz, Inc. and founder of Lenz Music, said he is thrilled to bring one of his favorite musicians to DBF.

“Having Patterson close out this year’s festival is a real treat,” he said. “Everyone at Lenz Music has followed him for years.”

Many of the festival’s featured musicians will do more than just perform their music. Several singer-songwriters who double as authors will be discussing their literary ventures during daytime appearances at Eddie’s Attic.

Saturday, Arthur Edwards will talk about his second novel, “Ghost Notes”; Doug Hoekstra will discuss his first collection of essays and musical fiction titled “Bothering the Coffee Drinkers”; and Bill Morrissey will talk about his novel, “Edson.”

Saturday evening, the three singer-songwriters will return to the stage to perform their music.

Sunday, Tommy Womack will talk about his first novel, “The Lavender Boys and Elsie,” and Marshall Chapman will discuss her novel “Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller.”

Sunday night, Chapman will join singer-songwriter Matraca Berg and authors Jill McCorkle and Lee Smith in a performance titled “Good ol’ Girls in Concert,” a musical collaboration between the four women.

The daytime appearances at Eddie’s Attic will be free and open to all festival attendees, but tickets will be required to attend the evening performances. Tickets can by purchased in advance through Eddie’s Attic, over the phone at 404-377-4976, or at www.eddiesattic.com.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical is the largest independent book festival in the country and one of the 10 largest overall. Each year, more than 250 authors and 50,000 festival goers crowd the historic downtown Decatur square to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more.
