The 2008 AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by
DeKalb Medical Gets the Community Involved

Local Shops Celebrate Literature

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (DBF) isn’t the only thing bringing authors to Decatur this Labor Day weekend – local businesses are joining in on the festival’s celebration of literature!

DBF will be August 29-31, on and around the downtown Decatur Square.

“The community has always supported the festival, and we’re excited that local businesses are more actively participating,” said Daren Wang, DBF Executive Director.

Mingei World Arts, located at 427 Church Street, just across from the Decatur Square Plaza, will host Daryn Kagan, former CNN news anchor and creator of darynkagan.com, an award-winning website that offers hopeful and inspirational news on Saturday, August 30 at 3 p.m.

Kagan will be signing her new book, “What’s Possible! 50 True Stories of People Who Dared to Dream They Could Make a Difference,” available at Mingei. The book, like her website, tells inspirational stories about overcoming obstacles to accomplish great things.

Sharon Franco Rothschild, owner of the Decatur boutique and knitting studio Two Stix, will debut her new book, “Sweater Renewal: Felting Knits into New Sweaters and Accessories” on August 19, just ten days before DBF. “Sweater Renewal” advocates recycling old wool sweaters and scarves and instructs readers on how to create new clothing, accessories, and home décor out of older woolen items. Rothschild will give knitting demonstrations in her store on Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31, and she’ll hold a launch party Saturday evening for her book.

Hoopla, a Decatur shop that sells children’s clothing, toys, and more, is contributing to the festival’s Madeline Children’s Parade on Saturday, August 30 at 9 a.m.

Local businesses are also lending DBF their venues to use as stages for festival events. Eddie’s Attic will host singer/songwriters and published authors who will talk about their books during the day, and at night, Eddie’s has scheduled their return to the stage as musicians.

Twain’s Billiards and Tap will host the Writer’s Conference Happy Hour on Saturday, August 30 from 6-8 p.m., an event that will include live music, a wet flannel t-shirt contest, and a kissing booth with wax lips, womaned by Hollis Gillespie.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical is the largest independent book festival in the country and one of the 10 largest overall. Each year, more than 250 authors and 50,000 festival goers crowd the historic downtown Decatur Square to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more.
