Harry Potter Comes to AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical

Cheryl Klein, Continuity Editor of Harry Potter Series, Coming to DBF

Grab your Nimbus 2008 and set route to Decatur. The third annual Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (DBF) is proud to welcome Cheryl Klein, the continuity editor of the Harry Potter series.

DBF will be Labor Day weekend, August 29-31, on and around the downtown Decatur square.

On Saturday, August 30, at 4:30 p.m., Klein will be judging the Harry Potter Quiz Show on the Target Children's Stage. The muggle contestants, who will be selected from the audience, will duel to correctly answer trivia questions all about Rowling’s Wizardry World.

“The Harry Potter series has become, internationally, one of the best-loved series amongst young and old,” said Daren Wang, Executive Director of DBF. “We are honored to bring such an important person from the series to Decatur.”

Most people might find themselves asking, “just what is a continuity editor?” In the movie-making process, a continuity editor verifies the plot flow by checking for any mistakes or inconsistencies throughout the movie, because in shooting multiple sets and takes, errors can occur. Since the Harry Potter series was so elaborate and expansive, it needed a continuity editor, someone to make sure that from book-to-book, chapter-to-chapter, start-to-finish, everything added up, and that person was Cheryl Klein.

Klein will also give a workshop on writing children's books. The workshop will take place Friday, August 29, 4-6 p.m. at Agnes Scott College.

For the Harry Potter Enthusiast, there are several other events to take note of.

Animagus, a local band, will be singing from 4 to 4:30 p.m. at The Escape (teen stage). Animagus’s songs are all about the Harry Potter books, so this will be a must-see/hear event for Harry Potter fans.

Also Saturday, author Sarah Prineas will be presenting her book “The Magic Thief” on the children’s stage prior to the Harry Potter Quiz Show. “The Magic Thief” has been likened to Harry Potter, and publisher’s weekly stated, “Readers clamoring for magical tales will enjoy Prineas's fast-paced first novel, the opener of a promising trilogy.”

Children’s activities, readings, and speeches will be given throughout the festival. Be sure not to miss Saturday’s children’s parade with John Bemelmans Marciano, author of the first new Madeline book released in over 50 years, and grandson of Madeline’s creator Ludwig Bemelmans. Following the parade, Bemelmans will read from the newest Madeline book, “Madeline and the Cats of Rome.”

Interviews available upon request.
