AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical
Announces Friday Field Trips

Select Local Students Will Attend Festival Preview

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (DBF) will feature Friday Field Trips for students in the City Schools of Decatur. For the second year in a row, Decatur students will be able to enjoy the festival before it opens to the public.

The festival will be Labor Day Weekend, August 29-31, on and around the downtown Decatur Square.

The Friday Field Trips Program is supported by a grant from the Decatur Education Foundation.

“We have a spectacular lineup of children and teen activities, and with Friday Field Trips, City Schools of Decatur students get the opportunity to hear from their favorite authors in a smaller, more personal setting,” said DBF Executive Director Daren Wang.

K-3rd graders will hear about “Thump, Quack, Moo,” the latest release from Doreen Cronin, creator of Caldecott Medal winning picture books; attend a presentation by the teen-run Wren’s Nest publishing company, which creates an annual literary magazine that will be launched at the festival; and enjoy children’s activities sponsored by Target.

3rd-5th graders will attend a discussion by pop-up book creator duo Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart about their latest creation, “Fairies and Magical Creatures,” and will listen to Sarah Prineas talk about her latest release, “The Magic Thief.”

6th-8th graders will meet Adam Rex, novelist and illustrator, who will talk about his first novel, “The True Meaning of Smekday,” and hear a talk by DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Marvin Arrington, author of the autobiography, “Making My Mark: the Story of a Man Who Wouldn’t Stay in His Place.”

9th-12th graders will attend a presentation by Alan Gratz, author of “Something Rotten,” a young adult murder mystery based on “Hamlet,” with an accompanying performance by actors from the Shakespeare Tavern.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical is the largest independent book festival in the country and one of the 10 largest overall. Each year, more than 250 authors and 50,000 festival goers crowd the historic downtown Decatur Square to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more.

Interviews available upon request.
