For the first time, the Decatur Book Festival is hosting a space exclusively for teenagers. Talk with your favorite authors, debate with your fellow readers, and even take the stage during open mics.
The Escape will host readings, performances, and panel discussions by popular young adult authors, including:
Special events include Open Lunchbox, an open mic event for teens; the “Fantasy vs. Sci Fi Smackdown,” a discussion about which genre is better, moderated by Brandon Sanderson; a performance by Animagus, a Harry Potter inspired acoustic rock band; and “Break in Case of Emergency (This Book Could Save Your Life),” a panel discussion of adult authors talking about books they wish they had read when they were 16.
The Teen Poetry Slam will be held on the Target Children’s stage, but is open to slam poets ages 13 to 18. The competition will include celebrity judges and prizes.
The Wren’s Nest Publishing Company provides an opportunity for selected teenagers to learn about how to produce a literary magazine. All content and design will be created and edited by teenagers. The magazine will be launched at the book festival
