"Though we're slightly concerned that they may have emboldened our enemies, we loved Brooks & Company Dance's ominous take on unquestioning allegiance in THE LOTTERY. Choreographer Joanna Brooks reworked a canonical Stravinsky/Nijinsky ballet, Le Sacre du Printemps, thrusting Nijinsky's angular, jolting choreography into the plot of Shirley Jackson's short story, "The Lottery," giving new meaning to the original ballet's ritual sacrifice"

brooks & company dance, founded in 2005 by Joanna Brooks, is an Atlanta-based modern dance company that creates choreographic work influenced by dance and cultural history, current political and social climates, and the pure joy of movement—often deconstructing the classical canon. In addition to the recognition in 2006 for The Lottery, the company also received Creative Loafing's 2007 Best of Atlanta readers' picks for both "Best Dance Company" and "Best Dance Performance" for Shorts II. The 2008-2009 Season will premiere Joanna Brooks' CRUX, a deconstruction of Arthur Miller's play The Crucible set to the music of Sergei Rachmaninov, at Theatrical Outfit's The Balzer Theater in October 2008.
Joanna Brooks is the Founder and Artistic Director of brooks & company dance. Her choreography credits include ballets and modern works commissioned by dance companies as well as industrials and musical theater. She has created pieces for Athens Ballet Theater, Ambiguité Contemporary Ballet, Spitzer Dance Company, and for Arts in the Park at Atlanta's Historic Oakland Cemetery.
