Assemble Your Book Krewe for the 2007 AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb MedicalIt’s time to assemble your Krewe for the 2007 AJC Decatur Book Festival Presented by DeKalb Medical (DBF) Promenade of the Book Krewes! In the spirit of New Orleans, the Promenade of the Book Krewes will take place Sunday, September 2, from 6-6:45 p.m. on the downtown Decatur square as part of the closing festivities.
Book clubs, writer’s groups, bookstore and library employees, and any other assemblage of book lovers are invited to form “Krewes" and promenade around the square, past the celebrity judges, for the chance at winning a prize from one of the several categories.
Krewes should assemble by Quizno’s on West Court Square, at the intersection of Clairemont Avenue and Ponce de Leon Avenue. The Promenade will then proceed around the Old Courthouse and past the bandstand.
“We pride ourselves on having something for everyone at the festival,” said Daren Wang, Executive Director of DBF. “The Krewe promenade is a new addition this year and we hope bibliophiles from around Atlanta will come participate in this fun, goofy, and exciting tribute to New Orleans.”
Prizes will be awarded in several “best of” categories, including Fancy Dress Krewe, Pun, Float, Chant, Music, and Dance. There will also be some judge’s choice awards.
Celebrity judges include Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Trethewey, Roy Blount, Jr., Hollis Gillespie, Tina McElroy Ansa, Joshilyn Jackson, Julie Cannon, Jackie Miles, and Karin Gillespie. All of the judges will give signed copies of their books to the winners. Trethewey and Jackson have also agreed to come as a guest to a book club or writer’s group meeting. If a bookstore wins, they’d go give a signing.
So what exactly should you do? It’s all up to you! Dress up as your favorite character or author, play instruments, chant, build a themed float (no motorized vehicles please), dance, and most importantly, have fun!
To register your Krewe, please send your Krewe name and contact information to krewes@decaturbookfestival.com.
