Jack Bass is author or co-author of seven nonfiction books about the American South. His most recent book is "Strom: The Complicated Personal and Political Life of Strom Thurmond." He is a professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at the College of Charleston. Bass studied as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard and received a Ph.D. in American Studies from Emory University. While director of American South Special Projects at the University of South Carolina, he produced a 14-part television course, "The American South Comes of Age" and a PBS documentary, "A Different Dixie: Portraits of Change." He has written for the "Los Angeles Times," "The Atlanta Journal-Constitution," "The Washington Post," "The New Republic," "The Nation," and "The New York Times."
