Luckovich Joins Arianna Huffington, Michael Connelly, Emily Saliers, Touré at Labor Day Weekend Event
The Atlanta Journal Constitution Decatur Book Festival (AJC DBF) has announced that AJC editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich will join the inaugural festival’s star-laden lineup. He is the festival’s third Pulitzer Prize winner—Edward P. Jones and Robert Olen Butler are the others. The AJC DBF also recently announced political columnist and newsblogger Arianna Huffington as the keynote speaker.
The festival takes place Labor Day Weekend, September 1–3, at various venues in historic downtown Decatur.
“We are all very excited to have Mike Luckovich on board,” said AJC DBF Executive Director Daren Wang. “He offers our festival yet another leader in his genre, further establishing the AJC DBF as a premiere event in its first year.”
Luckovich recently won his second Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning; his first came in 1995. He joins over 100 other best–selling and Pulitzer-Prize-winning authors at an event that will feature live music, cooking demonstrations, and an interactive children's stage.
Luckovich will present at the Old Decatur Courthouse on Saturday, September 2, at 5:30, giving attendees an inside glimpse at the creative process that has produced his two Pulitzers and numerous other awards. He has a book coming out immediately after the festival titled “Four More Wars.” It is a collection of his editorial cartoons, accompanied by humorous anecdotes.
In addition to Luckovich, Jones, Butler, and Huffington, the AJC DBF will also feature Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls, NY Times best-seller Michael Connelly, hip hop writer and Rolling Stone magazine Contributing Editor Touré, and Oprah Book Club pick author Pearl Cleage.
During the event, the historic downtown Decatur square will be packed with over 100 world-class authors, dozens of booksellers, and publishers; children’s activities; food and beer vendors; and a wine garden. Local venues, including Eddie’s Attic and Java Monkey, will house live music and poetry readings. Cooking demonstrations will be held at The Cook’s Warehouse on Ponce de Leon Avenue. The festival will also host the 15th Annual Atlanta Antiquarian Book Fair. The event will conclude Sunday evening with a barbecue picnic and fireworks show.
