The Literary World Descends upon Decatur

Inaugural Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival
Set for September 1-3, 2006

The city of Atlanta’s cultural renaissance continues this fall with the inaugural Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival (DBF), to be held over Labor Day weekend, September 1-3, 2006. Tens of thousands from metro Atlanta and beyond are expected to share the historic downtown Decatur square with world-class authors, editors, publishers, and booksellers for an event filled with literature, music, food, and fun.

“Atlanta has long needed a lively, family-friendly book festival,” says Daren Wang, Executive Director of DBF and publisher and editor of Verb: An Audioquarterly. “With the authors we have confirmed so far, DBF is shaping up to be a marquee literary event!”

The AJC and WSB AM-750 are among the sponsors of the event, which is Atlanta’s best and largest literary festival. DBF will feature lectures and signings from 100 national and local best-selling authors, representing all genres of books. Confirmed authors include:

  • Michael Connelly, best-selling mystery and thriller writer
  • Edward P. Jones, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Known World
  • Steve Berry, author of the best-selling novels The Amber Room and The Templar Legacy
  • Touré, popular hip-hop writer, Contributing Editor for Rolling Stone Magazine, correspondent for Black Entertainment Television (BET), and former correspondent for CNN
  • Robert Olen Butler, Pulitzer Prize winning author of A Good Scent From a Strange Mountain
  • Connie May Fowler, author of the Oprah's Book Club pick Before Women had Wings
  • Terry Kay, Georgia screenwriter and author of To Dance with a White Dog
  • Roy Blount Jr., Decatur native and author/screenwriter/humorist

During the event, the historic downtown Decatur square will be packed with local booksellers and authors, children’s activities, and a wine garden. Local venues, including Java Monkey and Eddie’s Attic, will house poetry readings and live music. Cooking demonstrations will be held at The Cook’s Warehouse on Ponce de Leon Avenue. DBF will provide a weekend of entertainment and activities for the entire family, and will conclude Sunday evening with a barbecue picnic and fireworks show.

This festival will establish Atlanta as an epicenter for the literary world, rivaling existing book festivals in Washington D.C., North Carolina, Miami, and Nashville. Local organizations and businesses are already involved in the planning stages of what is shaping up to be a world-class event.
