Chris Raschka

Chris Raschka, "a master of minimalism" (Publishers Weekly), received the Caldecott Honor for illustrating TheHello, Goodbye Window by Norton Juster and also for his picture book YO! YES? He is also the author-illustrator of such innovative children's books as Mysterious Thelonious, Like Likes Like, and Waffle. While he planned to be a biologist, Chris spent a lot of time painting and playing musical instruments (eventually mastering the viola) while growing up in Pennsylvania. After graduating from college, he was on his way for a summer at a crocodile farm in India, when a sudden opportunity to work in a home for handicapped children in St. Croix diverted him. While in St. Croix, Chris and his wife began exhibiting their artwork. Deferring graduate school, Chris took a job illustrating for the Michigan state bar association's publication, which led to political cartooning work. Finally, picture book artist Vladimir Radunsky persuaded him to move to New York to be nearer opportunities to illustrate children's books. Chris has published one or two lyrical, musical books every year since 1992. He lives with his wife and son in New York City.
